Apparatjik: Square Peg in a Round Hole [Meta Merge Un]
Possibly the world’s least-known supergroup, Apparatjik makes eccentric industrial dance-rock music to soundtrack tales of futuristic robot love stories. So, who are these mysterious sonic architects? Get this: Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, A-ha keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, Mew vocalist Jonas Bjerre, and Jason Mraz/KT Tunstall producer-songwriter Martin Terefe. Quite a supergroup, indeed! Back in November, Apparatjik announced through a series of cryptic posts that their upcoming second album would be a unique crowdsourcing experiment. They released an initial set of tracks for free and asked fans to “produce” the album through polls and Facebook posts. Based on fans’ votes and suggestions, a new version is created and posted online every week. This will continue until the final edition is released on February 21st, at which point nobody seems to know exactly what will happen. (Seriously, anyone who deciphers their posts with any degree of certainty deserves a huge high-five.) —Bill Ross

when working with apparatjik we all take off our band member or record producer hats. we then put on hoodies and left are the 4 of us singing, playing, making things and dancing (to keep warm as we mostly record in cold weather). we have a dogmatic approach to the process where we don’t allow any one apparatjik to stop anyone else’s idea with negativity or lack of enthusiasm. this way we also try to leave the fear hat (commonly used for human endeavours) by the door and all ideas can have a chance of conclusion. in apparatjik world this means the results will also be shared with the fans in one way or another as we tend to not sit on things for long as sofas, beaches or big grass fields are generally more comfortable for sitting.

On ‘Square Peg In A Round Hole - Draft 7’ the original 24 bit masters from Draft 1 have been mastered directly to 24-bit goodness by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studios in London. Electronic, distorted and acoustic sounds alike can be enjoyed in the way they were originally captured by Apparatjik. This exclusive draft of the album will be released in collaboration with our friends at Bowers and Wilkins and Society Of Sound.
